How to make Hard Seltzer or how to make White Claw.

Alright, I give up. I’m a bit late on the whole hard seltzer craze but people kept asking me how I would make a hard seltzer.

Hard seltzers have become very popular, whether drinking them at a college party, bar or while floating at the lake.  It may seem more daunting than making beer, but it is really quite simple.  Here’s how to make your own hard seltzer:

Ingredients

Instructions

Start with a clean workspace.  Sanitize all the equipment just like when you’re brewing beer.  Use a sanitizing solution or boiling water to sterilize all the equipment – from fermenting container to the stirring spoon.

Heat the water in a large pot to a boil and slowly add in the sugar.  Once the sugar is completed dissolved, remove the pot from the heat and let cool to room temperature.

Sprinkle in the packet of champagne yeast over the cooled sugar mixture, gently stir to make sure the yeast is evenly distributed.

Pour the mixture into your fermenting container and cover with lid or cheesecloth.  Let this set and ferment for 1-2 weeks at room temperature.  Make sure it’s in a dark, cool place.

If you want to add flavor to your hard seltzer, now is the time to add your preferred fruit juice and gently stir to incorporate the mixture.  Cover the fermenter again and let it be for another 2-3 days.

Once the fermentation is complete, bottle and carbonate your hard seltzer.  You can use sanitized bottles and a bottling wand to fill each bottle – but leave about an inch of space at the top of the bottle.  Add a small amount of sugar to each bottle to help with carbonation.  Cap the bottles and let them sit again at room temperature for another 2-3 days.

No denying it – these can be very delicious to drink and a heck of a lot of fun to create or recreate at home.

Chill and enjoy – cheers!
